The 2026 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition introduces an aluminium back and new accessory connections.
Amazon’s 2026 model adds an aluminium back and accessory pins, but drops standard wireless charging and costs $50 more than its predecessor at launch.
Amazon’s 2026 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition costs $250, bringing design changes and new accessory connections to its premium e-reader. However, it drops standard wireless charging and costs $50 more than the 2024 model did at launch.
The updated device retains 32GB of storage, IPX8 waterproofing and a 300dpi display. It also keeps the automatic front light, while adding an aluminium back and automatic screen rotation.
Kindle Paperwhite gains new accessory connections
Four pogo pins on the rear cover replace the previous model’s Qi-compatible wireless charging system. These contacts support new accessories, including an $80 Page Turn Cover with physical page-turn buttons.
Amazon also has a $60 charging stand, although its shipping date remains unknown. Both accessories work with the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, which also has the required pins.
Meanwhile, the power button moves from the bottom edge to the top right. The USB-C port remains at the bottom.
The new model is one millimetre thinner than its predecessor. On the Seaglass Green version, Amazon has also matched the front bezel colour to the rear panel.
Display updates and reading controls
Amazon says the updated screen offers its highest contrast ratio yet, promising deeper blacks and sharper text. The display uses an oxide-thin film transistor backplane, alongside the adjustable warm light.
In addition, an ambient sensor adjusts the front light to suit surrounding conditions. Readers can switch this feature off and control brightness manually instead.
A new double-tap gesture provides another way to turn pages. Two taps on the right edge advance a page, while two on the left go back. However, the existing single-tap screen controls remain available.
An accelerometer also enables automatic screen rotation, with an option to lock the orientation. Amazon claims battery life of up to 12 weeks per charge.
Standard model offers a cheaper option
The regular 2026 Paperwhite costs $200 and also includes the high-contrast display. That leaves a $50 gap between the standard model and the Signature Edition.
For that premium, the Signature Edition offers features including extra storage, automatic brightness adjustment and support for pogo-pin accessories. However, buyers who want the page-turn cover or charging stand must budget for those separately.
