Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has welcomed veteran Kikuyu-language broadcaster Evelyn Waithira Muithirania to his political outfit. Gachagua received Muithirania at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
According to reports, she left the Jubilee Party to pursue the Murang’a County Woman Representative seat on a DCP ticket in the 2027 General Election. Her entry adds a familiar media personality to the party’s growing political presence in the Mt Kenya region.
Evelyn Waithira Targets Murang’a Woman Representative Seat
Muithirania plans to challenge for the Murang’a Woman Representative position currently held by Betty Njeri Maina, who won the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in 2022.
Gachagua reportedly pointed to Muithirania’s previous electoral performance as evidence of her political experience. She finished second in the 2022 race, securing more than 100,000 votes.
Her latest move signals another attempt to translate her public profile and grassroots connections into electoral support.
Gachagua Promises Fair Party Primaries
During the meeting, Gachagua reportedly assured Muithirania that DCP would conduct free and fair internal nomination processes.
He also asked her to lead party membership registration efforts ahead of the planned March 2027 primaries. The nomination process will determine whether she secures the party’s ticket to contest the seat.
The move comes as political parties prepare for the 2027 General Election, with aspirants seeking nominations and strengthening their support bases across the country.

Who Is Evelyn Waithira Muithirania?
Muithirania is known for her career in Kikuyu-language broadcasting, particularly her time at Inooro FM. She earned recognition among Central Kenya audiences through her work in vernacular radio. She was popularly associated with the name “Baruthi wa Urimi,” reflecting her focus on farming and agricultural education.
Beyond broadcasting, reports describe her as an entrepreneur, grassroots civic educator and advocate for small-scale farmers.
Her experience in media could help her connect with voters familiar with her work. However, winning the party nomination and the general election will depend on the campaign and support she builds.
DCP Expands Its Political Presence
Muithirania’s entry forms part of DCP’s reported efforts to grow its membership in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the next election.
Her move also highlights the continued participation of media personalities in Kenyan politics, where public recognition can provide a platform for political campaigns.
As the 2027 election approaches, attention will turn to DCP’s nomination process and the competition for the Murang’a Woman Representative seat.
