Indonesia seeks new partnerships in healthcare and manufacturing as Kenya advances vaccine processing cooperation with the Asian nation.

Kenya-Indonesia trade has reached $690 million, with Indonesia seeking further investment partnerships in healthcare, manufacturing and industrial development. Both countries have identified pharmaceutical cooperation as a priority for expanding their economic relationship.

Indonesian Ambassador to Kenya Witjaksono Adji outlined the opportunities during Independence Day celebrations at his Nairobi residence. He also encouraged Kenyan businesses to attend the Indonesia Nairobi Expo on November 26 and 27.

Kenya-Indonesia trade opportunities

Adji said the expo would help companies explore investment opportunities, build partnerships and strengthen commercial links. He identified energy, aviation, maritime industries and value addition as further areas for cooperation.

Healthcare is already drawing interest from Indonesian businesses. Six companies participated in the World Health Expo in Nairobi, showcasing pharmaceuticals, personal care products, herbal products and medical equipment.

According to Adji, their participation reflected Indonesia’s interest in commercial partnerships that also support stronger health systems.

Vaccine processing partnership takes shape

Meanwhile, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale highlighted ongoing work to expand Kenya’s local vaccine processing capacity. Duale attended the celebrations as chief guest, representing Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

He cited collaboration between the Kenya BioVax Institute and Indonesia’s state-owned pharmaceutical company, PT Bio Farma. The partnership involves transferring advanced biomanufacturing technology to support local vaccine processing.

Duale said the two countries were accelerating Kenya’s ability to begin local fill-and-finish processing for life-saving vaccines. He added that the cooperation could strengthen long-term health security and benefit the wider East African region.

Alongside this work, Kenya’s Pharmacy and Poisons Board is cooperating with Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control. Duale said those regulatory links would help improve access to quality generic medicines.

He linked that goal to combining Indonesian pharmaceutical expertise with Kenya’s manufacturing and export incentives. He also described Indonesia as a trusted partner in efforts to reduce pharmaceutical import dependence.

Diplomatic and education links deepen

Kenya and Indonesia established diplomatic relations in 1979. Former Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s visit to Kenya in 2023 gave the relationship fresh momentum.

Adji also expressed interest in a future visit to Indonesia by Kenya’s President.

Beyond commercial ties, the ambassador said Kenya had become the second-largest recipient of Indonesia’s Aid Scholarship. He said educational exchanges could help students build lasting connections between the two countries.
