The Kenya Navy is exploring advanced radar, surveillance and counter-drone technologies from Swedish defence company Saab.
The technologies were presented during an engagement with the Kenya Navy in Mombasa as Kenya seeks to strengthen its Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA).
Saab Demonstrates New Technology
Saab presented its maritime surveillance and coastal radar systems to Kenya Navy Commander Major General Paul Otieno.
The systems can improve the detection and tracking of activities across Kenya’s maritime domain. The company also demonstrated 3D radar technology and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS).
These systems can detect and track drones while supporting responses to emerging aerial threats.
Underwater Surveillance
The engagement also covered surveillance below the sea. Saab showcased advanced sensors and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) for monitoring underwater activities.
According to the Ministry of Defence, these technologies could improve visibility across the underwater domain. The systems would therefore complement existing maritime surveillance capabilities.
Focus on Maritime Security
The Kenya Navy continues to strengthen its ability to monitor Kenya’s territorial waters and wider maritime interests. The Ministry of Defence says maritime security threats are becoming more complex above, on and beneath the sea.
Therefore, the Navy is placing greater focus on modern surveillance, detection and response capabilities. The Saab engagement forms part of these broader efforts to strengthen Kenya’s maritime security capabilities.
However, the latest engagement does not confirm that Kenya has purchased the Saab systems. Instead, the Navy is assessing emerging technologies and their potential application within Kenya’s maritime operating environment.
