Veteran journalist Kitavi Mutua has died while receiving treatment after a reported snakebite at his home in Kitui South.
The Nation Media Group correspondent died on Friday night at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital. He had spent about a week seeking medical attention following the reported incident.
Preliminary reports indicate that a venomous snake bit Mutua while he slept at his Kitui County home. He then sought immediate medical care.
His condition reportedly worsened as the venom spread through his body and affected his internal organs. He later entered the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Kasalu remembers Kitavi Mutua as a mentor
Meanwhile, colleagues and leaders have mourned Mutua, remembering his dedication to journalism and service to local communities. Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu also paid tribute to the long-serving correspondent.
In her tribute, Kasalu recalled his support when she entered politics about a decade ago. She said he generously shared his knowledge and helped her understand the relationship between politics and the media.
Beyond his reporting, she remembered him as a friend and mentor who believed in helping others. His guidance, she added, shaped her approach to communication and political engagement.
Kasalu described his death as a loss to his family, friends, fellow journalists and the people of Kitui. Mutua worked as a Kitui-based Daily Nation correspondent, covering politics, development and issues affecting residents.
Over the years, his reporting also brought news from Kitui and the wider Ukambani region to national audiences.
