Fenerbahce ended Liverpool’s winning start in Europe with a 3-2 victory in Istanbul.
Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2, while Como matched a Champions League record and Real Madrid secured another late comeback win.
A 3-2 Liverpool defeat at Fenerbahce on Wednesday ended their perfect start to this season’s Champions League. Meanwhile, Como thrashed Lens 9-1 to equal the competition’s biggest winning margin.
Real Madrid also preserved their flawless league-phase record with a late comeback at AEK Athens. Arsenal and Manchester City both claimed away victories.
Liverpool defeat follows two lost leads
Liverpool arrived in Istanbul after a Premier League loss to Arsenal, seeking a return to winning form. They had beaten Atletico Madrid, LASK and Villarreal in their opening three European matches.
Trey Nyoni, 19, opened the scoring with his first senior goal, but Fenerbahce soon drew level. Mason Greenwood’s deflected free-kick brought the Turkish side back into the contest.
Alexander Isak then restored Liverpool’s advantage with a header in the 69th minute. However, Archie Brown quickly equalised before Vedat Muriqi scored the home side’s winner.
Former Liverpool player Dirk Kuyt led Fenerbahce as interim coach, with the club sixth in the Turkish Super Lig. They had also suffered a 6-0 defeat at Aston Villa earlier in the competition.
Despite the setback, Isak said Liverpool’s earlier results had left them in a solid position. He urged the team to return to winning ways in their next match.
Como match record as Madrid rally again
In France, Cesc Fabregas’s Como became the third team in the modern Champions League to win by eight goals. Liverpool beat Besiktas 8-0 in 2007, while Real Madrid defeated Malmo by the same score in 2015.
Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick as Como collected their third victory in four league-phase games. The result also followed their 4-1 win over Manchester United two weeks earlier.
Nico Paz, Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf and Mattia Liberali added goals, alongside Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli. Ruben Aguilar scored Lens’s only reply.
Como also became only the second team to score nine in a Champions League match. Bayern Munich achieved that mark in their 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in 2024.
Meanwhile, Madrid twice came from behind to beat AEK Athens 3-2, following their previous comeback victory at Roma. Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe cancelled out goals from Aboubakary Koita and Stavros Pilios.
Federico Valverde then struck the stoppage-time winner, before Koita received a late red card. Mbappe’s equaliser took his season tally to 16 goals across all competitions.
Elsewhere, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres scored as Arsenal beat Slavia Prague 2-1. Erling Haaland’s late winner also gave Manchester City a 3-2 victory at RB Leipzig.
Como sit fourth with nine points, one behind Arsenal and three behind Paris Saint-Germain and Madrid. City are also among nine teams on nine points.
