Mulembe Golfing Society will host its Ocean Breeze tournament at Diamonds Leisure Golf Club, bringing its Western Kenya traditions to the South Coast.

Mulembe golf will bring a blend of sport and Western Kenya culture to Diani’s Diamonds Leisure Golf Club. The Mulembe Golfing Society plans to hold its Ocean Breeze golfing extravaganza at the venue in Kwale County.

Chairman Eric Nyongesa said the society wants to take its identity to the beach through the tournament. He also expressed readiness for an event that welcomes golfers from across Kenya.

Beyond the competition, the gathering will celebrate the society’s cultural roots and fellowship. Ingokho, the chicken closely associated with its gatherings, forms part of that tradition.

Mulembe golf builds on shared roots

Golfers from Western Kenya founded the society after moving to Nairobi, Mombasa and other towns. They wanted to maintain ties with home while sharing their language, playing golf and gathering over meals.

The name Mulembe means peace, while the society’s roots span Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and Kitale. Its gatherings therefore combine time on the course with opportunities to reconnect through shared culture.

The society also has a history of staging competitive golf at the Coast. In 2023, its Pro-Am tournament at Mombasa Golf Club attracted 128 golfers, with Victor Simbi taking the overall title.

Professional participation remains important to the society, which has consistently supported including professionals in its tournaments. For the Diani gathering, meanwhile, Nyongesa emphasised both the golf and the culture members will bring to the South Coast.
