FKF delegates expelled McDonald Mariga and six NEC officials at a meeting in Meru.
Delegates voted out seven officials at a Meru meeting, citing alleged constitutional breaches amid a leadership dispute.
Football Kenya Federation delegates have expelled Vice President McDonald Mariga and six National Executive Committee members. The decision followed a Special General Meeting in Meru County on Saturday.
FKF said the officials faced allegations of serious and repeated breaches of its Constitution and applicable FIFA regulations. The expulsions mark a further escalation in the dispute between Mariga’s faction and President Hussein Mohammed’s leadership.
Grounds for McDonald Mariga and NEC expulsions
Besides the vice president, delegates expelled Robert Kenneth Macharia, representing Central, and Bernard Korir Lagat of Upper Rift Valley. They also removed Women’s Representative Violet Kerubo Momanyi and Nyanza representative Collins Opiyo Kalee.
The other officials were Gabriel Mghendi of Coast and Daniel Akala Shikanda of Nairobi.
FKF said the Assembly considered an NEC resolution dated April 24, 2026, which sought to remove Mohammed and other officials. It also cited the officials’ failure to attend duly convened NEC meetings and unauthorised communication on the federation’s behalf.
The Assembly acted under Articles 16 and 24 of the FKF Constitution. Those provisions allow the expulsion of members and dismissal of NEC officials.
Police presence amid leadership dispute
Meanwhile, police deployed at the Three Steers Hotel in Meru after hundreds of people gathered at the venue. Reports indicated that officers used teargas at the entrance to control the crowd.
Mariga arrived in a police van, and officers escorted him into the hotel for the tense meeting.
The crisis began when his faction passed resolutions on April 24, 2026, seeking to suspend Mohammed. Those resolutions also targeted Acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru and nominated NEC member Abdullahi Yusuf.
The faction’s accusations concerned a Sh42.48 million insurance transaction linked to the 2024 African Nations Championship, known as CHAN.
However, the Sports Disputes Tribunal and the High Court later issued injunctions blocking those resolutions. The orders halted their implementation pending the hearing of a case filed by FKF.
