Deputy President Kithure Kindiki says President William Ruto will launch construction of the proposed 60-kilometre elevated road linking Thika to Museum Hill.

The government plans to break ground on the Nairobi-Thika Expressway within one to two months, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said. President William Ruto is expected to preside over the launch of the proposed 60-kilometre road.

Speaking in Kiambu County on October 28, Kindiki said the government was finalising project details. The elevated expressway would connect Thika town to Museum Hill in Nairobi, offering motorists an alternative route.

Kindiki said the project aims to ease congestion along the busy corridor serving Thika, Ruiru and Juja. Motorists would use the elevated road while others continue travelling on the existing highway.

Nairobi-Thika Expressway feasibility and funding

Kindiki compared the proposed road to the Nairobi Expressway, which runs from JKIA to James Gichuru in Westlands. He said the Thika Superhighway, built during former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, still experiences congestion as motorist numbers grow.

Meanwhile, the announcement follows the government’s engagement of experts about a month earlier to conduct a feasibility study. That assessment is expected to establish the project’s technical and financial requirements.

The study would examine possible routes, engineering needs and traffic capacity, alongside estimated construction costs. It would also assess environmental and social impacts, as well as the amount of land required.

Preliminary estimates put the project’s cost at between Ksh150 billion and Ksh200 billion. The government is expected to pursue a public-private partnership to finance construction.

Muthaiga-Kiambu road expansion also planned

During the same visit, Kindiki also announced progress on the Muthaiga-Kiambu road expansion. He said the contract had already been signed and the contractor was expected to begin construction.

The project would upgrade the road from Muthaiga Police Station to Ndumberi in Kiambu County. Plans call for a dual carriageway to replace the existing single carriageway.

Kindiki said the expansion aims to ease persistent congestion for motorists travelling between Kiambu town and Nairobi. In particular, it would address traffic jams that affect commuters during peak hours.

While the proposed expressway would provide a separate elevated route towards Thika, the Kiambu project would widen an existing road. Both projects target congested connections between Nairobi and neighbouring towns.
