The court found insufficient evidence linking four accused people to the March 2023 killings of Edward Nyagechi and Grace Mong’ina Morema.

A court has acquitted four people in the Nyamira murder case involving a US-based Kenyan-American couple. It found insufficient evidence linking them to the March 2023 killings.

The four are Ezekiel Mogeni Migiro, Peris Ondara, Dennis Ondara Clement and Peter Njoroge Kirika. They faced charges over the deaths of Edward Nyagechi and his wife, Grace Mong’ina Morema.

The prosecution accused them of participating in the killings between the night of March 20 and early March 21, 2023. However, the court ruled that the evidence did not establish a connection between the accused and the murders.

The acquittal ends the prosecution of the four over the couple’s deaths at their Nyamakoroto home in Gesima, Nyamira County.

Evidence in the Nyamira murder case

The couple lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and had travelled to Kenya for a holiday. Neighbours raised concern when they failed to appear for their usual morning routine. The couple were found dead on March 21, 2023.

Postmortem examinations established that Edward had suffered head injuries and stab wounds, while Grace died from strangulation. Investigators also uncovered suspicious financial transactions involving the couple’s mobile phones on the night of the killings.

During the trial, witnesses testified about money transfers from the phones, including transactions involving Sh62,000. The case also drew considerable public attention, with relatives repeatedly seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
