President William Ruto’s trip to New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly has renewed debate over the size of Kenya’s official delegation.
The President arrived in New York on September 20 alongside First Lady Rachel Ruto and other Kenyan officials.
However, the presence of several senior government officials abroad has raised questions over public spending and local government operations.
Why So Many Officials Are in New York?
Critics have questioned whether Kenya needs several Cabinet Secretaries and senior officials at the same time during UNGA week.
The concerns are particularly focused on accountability at home.
Questions have also emerged over whether officials travelling abroad can effectively handle parliamentary and Senate responsibilities during the meetings.
Some critics have therefore called for greater clarity on the specific roles assigned to each member of the delegation.
The government, however, says the delegation serves specific diplomatic and economic interests.
Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’Oei said relevant Cabinet Secretaries would accompany the President to advance Kenya’s interests.
He cited debt sustainability, climate finance, digital trade and regional security among the issues on the agenda.
How Much Is the Trip Costing Taxpayers?
The cost of the delegation has also become a major talking point.
Critics want the government to disclose the overall expenditure on flights, accommodation, allowances and other logistical costs.
They argue that such transparency would help Kenyans understand the value attached to the foreign trip.
However, specific figures for the total cost of the 2026 delegation have not been established in the sources reviewed.
The government says the trip could help attract investment exceeding KSh10 billion.
It is also pursuing partnerships in technology, infrastructure, health, agriculture, energy and manufacturing.
Questions Over Rachel Ruto Role
First Lady Rachel Ruto is also accompanying the President in New York.
Her official profile highlights her work on women’s empowerment, financial inclusion, clean cooking and children’s welfare.
Her presence has nevertheless triggered questions about public funding for activities associated with the Office of the First Lady.
The debate has focused on whether such expenditure should be disclosed and justified when public resources fund official travel.
Kenya’s Constitution requires public funds to be withdrawn through authorised legal and parliamentary processes.
As the UNGA meetings continue, the debate is likely to remain focused on one issue: how much Kenya spends on international diplomacy and what taxpayers receive in return.
