The former president’s office, political leaders and other well-wishers celebrated his public service as he steps back from formal party leadership.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta turns 65 on Monday, October 26, with political leaders and Kenyans sending birthday tributes. The Office of the Fourth President led the messages, celebrating his service to Kenya and continued contribution across Africa.

The office wished Kenyatta a joyful celebration with family and loved ones. It also offered prayers for his health, peace and strength in the years ahead.

Meanwhile, the Democracy for the Citizens Party sent its wishes through social media, praying for his good health. The party is associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina also urged Kenyans to wish the former president well and prayed for blessings upon him. Other well-wishers included Moses Nsereko and musician Muigai Njoroge, who celebrated his life and wished him continued good health.

Born on October 26, 1961, Kenyatta served as Kenya’s fourth president from 2013 to 2022. He handed over power to President William Ruto at the end of his tenure.

Jubilee and Azimio leadership changes

The birthday follows Kenyatta’s recent departure from formal leadership roles in Jubilee and the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

In September, he handed Jubilee’s leadership to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. However, Kenyatta said he would remain a senior adviser and party member.

The handover followed a legal dispute over retired presidents holding formal political party positions after leaving office. Matiang’i took charge as Jubilee reorganised ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kenyatta then tendered his resignation as Azimio chairperson on October 5, weeks after the Jubilee transition. In his resignation letter, he linked the decision to the formal transfer of Jubilee’s leadership.

However, he said the resignation did not end his association with the coalition. The coalition has since rebranded as The Ukombozi Alliance under Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Despite leaving those positions, Kenyatta remains prominent in discussions about the opposition and political support in Mt Kenya. He has also continued regional peace work and diplomatic engagements since leaving State House in September 2022.
