US Vice President JD Vance

JD Vance joked that his daughter’s charity donations made her a Democrat, before the party won both chambers of Congress.

The Vance toy joke about his four-year-old daughter took an ironic turn after Democrats won control of Congress. The US vice president had used the family anecdote to urge voters to defeat the party.

JD Vance made the remarks at a campaign rally in Rome, New York, on November 2. However, the November 3 midterm elections delivered a major setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

Vance toy joke centres on charity donations

During his final campaign appearance before the vote, Vance described preparing for his family’s Christmas toy drive. The family supports Toys for Tots, a charity that gives presents to children from disadvantaged families.

He said he had asked his daughter, Mirabel, to choose a few toys to donate. Instead of picking from her own collection, she brought him two toys belonging to her brothers.

Vance told supporters the choice suggested he had raised a Democrat despite his efforts. He then compared her decision to taking another person’s belongings and giving them away.

The audience laughed as Vance used the story to mock Democratic wealth redistribution policies. He also turned the anecdote into an appeal for a Republican victory the following day. A video of the exchange later circulated online, drawing attention beyond the rally.

Democrats gain power over Trump’s agenda

By November 4, Democrats had secured both the House of Representatives and the Senate following the midterm vote. Their gains included victories in several traditionally Republican states, among them Texas, South Carolina, Iowa and Kansas.

The party flipped at least seven Senate seats, strengthening its position against the Republican administration. As a result, Democrats gained greater influence over the legislative agenda and more power to scrutinise Trump’s government.

Control of Congress also gives the party scope to launch investigations and challenge some of the president’s policy priorities. The result brought an ironic conclusion to Vance’s campaign appeal: the party he had mocked now held both congressional chambers.
