Ruto adviser Makau Mutua questions Sifuna’s political consistency after the Nairobi senator joined opposition talks at Gachagua’s residence.
President William Ruto’s senior constitutional affairs adviser, Makau Mutua, has criticised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over the Wamunyoro meeting with Rigathi Gachagua. Mutua accused the senator of abandoning his earlier political principles by engaging the former deputy president.
In a post on X, Mutua questioned Sifuna’s willingness to treat Gachagua as a political partner. He cited the senator’s previous criticism of Gachagua over allegations of corruption, tribalism, ethnic divisions and abuse of office.
Mutua also challenged whether the engagement matched the standards Sifuna had previously advanced. His remarks focused on the senator’s political consistency as opposition leaders pursue cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wamunyoro meeting opens further consultations
Gachagua hosted Sifuna and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement on October 20 at his Nyeri County residence. The visit followed the DCP leader’s return from the United States.
Gachagua said the discussions addressed Kenya’s political future and the formation of a new administration. Sifuna, meanwhile, described the visit as a starting point for further consultations to promote opposition unity.
However, the two sides did not announce a formal coalition agreement or a joint presidential ticket. The talks brought together politicians from different camps without settling their competing leadership ambitions.
Sifuna defends engagement across political boundaries
Sifuna has defended his decision to engage Gachagua, saying regional or ethnic considerations should not restrict political cooperation. He argued that leaders should remain free to interact across political and geographical boundaries.
Nevertheless, Mutua’s criticism centres on whether that cooperation conflicts with Sifuna’s earlier positions. The exchange places questions of consistency and accountability alongside the opposition’s efforts to build a united front.
Opposition ticket remains unsettled
Meanwhile, opposition leaders continue discussing a presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027. Gachagua has previously expressed willingness to support Sifuna for the presidency.
He has also raised the possibility of becoming Sifuna’s running mate if opposition leaders agree. DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malalah has similarly advocated broader cooperation around the senator.
Malalah says he plans to meet Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to seek support for Sifuna’s presidential bid. However, opposition leaders have not publicly announced an agreed candidate, running mate or framework for a joint political platform.
