The Wiper leader says he will work with fellow opposition leaders to defeat Ruto democratically in 2027.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has challenged President William Ruto after the President identified him as his main political competitor. As Kalonzo challenges Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election, he says the opposition will pursue change through democratic means.

Musyoka spoke during a thanksgiving service at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kamikau, Tharaka Ward, on October 24. He was responding to Ruto’s assertion that he was working hard to outshine him.

The former vice president described the remarks as Ruto’s most honest admission in four years. He also argued that the acknowledgment showed the opposition was setting the country’s political pace.

Kalonzo challenges Ruto over political priorities

Musyoka said his goal was to remove Ruto through the ballot and secure leadership responsive to ordinary Kenyans. However, he maintained that his activities addressed national challenges rather than a personal dispute with the President.

He accused Ruto of spreading propaganda, distorting his statements and directing personal attacks at opposition leaders. He also criticised the President’s use of development project launches and relaunches to attack political opponents.

Instead, Musyoka said the administration should concentrate on living costs, citizens’ welfare and meaningful development. He maintained that political attacks would not divert him from campaigning for a change in leadership.

Wiper leader defends travel schedule

Musyoka also defended his recent engagements, describing a three-day schedule covering Machakos, Mombasa, London, Rome and Bondo. He said he completed those trips without a private jet or taxpayer funding.

He presented the travel account as a response to Ruto’s criticism of his political activities. The engagements, he said, formed part of his efforts to reach Kenyans and advance the opposition’s agenda.

Opposition cooperation ahead of 2027

Meanwhile, Musyoka reaffirmed his commitment to the broader Ukombozi movement and cooperation with other opposition leaders. He said changing the country’s leadership would require a collective effort, rather than the work of one individual.

He also framed his political mission in religious terms, expressing his belief that God was guiding his effort to change Kenya’s leadership. Musyoka said the movement would continue mobilising Kenyans around a different political direction.

His remarks add to political positioning ahead of the 2027 election, with opposition figures preparing to challenge Ruto’s administration.
