Hamida Kibwana graduates while serving in Senate
Kibwana chairs the Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transport and Housing. Fellow senators unanimously elected her to the position in September, replacing Migori Senator Eddy Oketch.
Her committee role covers roads, transport and housing matters, including sectors central to infrastructure and public service delivery. She joined the Senate in 2022 through nomination by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Before entering Parliament, Kibwana worked in electoral administration, election advisory services and political strategy. Her parliamentary profile traces that career back to 1997.
A career in elections and political strategy
According to the profile, Kibwana began as a returning officer and coordinator at the Electoral Commission of Kenya. She worked there until 2005 before moving to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
At UNDP, she served as an election adviser specialist from 2006 to 2015. She subsequently worked as a strategist and election expert for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga between 2016 and 2022.
That work also included a role at Odinga’s presidential secretariat. Meanwhile, Kibwana pursued further studies at Marist International University between 2018 and 2022, before undertaking her latest postgraduate qualification.
Sifuna draws cheers at ceremony
The graduation ceremony also drew attention when Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna received loud cheers from graduands and attendees. The audience responded after the university’s vice-chancellor introduced him.
His reception came amid political discussions about opposition leadership and possible presidential contenders for the 2027 election. However, the ceremony centred on academic achievement, bringing together graduands, university officials, families and invited guests.
