Max Dowman faces a three-game suspension following his dismissal against Fleetwood.
Max Dowman will miss Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool after an independent commission rejected the club’s appeal over his dismissal against Fleetwood.
Arsenal have lost their Dowman red card appeal following their shock League Cup exit at fourth-tier Fleetwood. The decision means 16-year-old Max Dowman will serve an immediate three-match ban for violent conduct.
The Football Association announced on Thursday that an independent commission had rejected both grounds of Arsenal’s challenge. The club had argued wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment.
Dowman received a red card in the 85th minute after kicking out at Harrison Neal following a strong challenge. Fleetwood then won the tie on penalties after a 1-1 draw, knocking out the Premier League champions.
Dowman red card ban begins at Liverpool
The teenager’s suspension starts with Arsenal’s Premier League match away to Liverpool on Sunday. Mikel Arteta’s side travel to Anfield level on points with league leaders Manchester City.
Arsenal will therefore seek a response to their cup defeat without Dowman as they return to league action. The failed appeal leaves the teenager facing the full three-game punishment for his dismissal at Fleetwood.
Meanwhile, Fleetwood’s victory has secured a League Cup quarter-final against another Premier League opponent. The fourth-tier side will face either Everton or Newcastle in the next round after ending Arsenal’s run in the competition.
