A 28-year-old mother from Juja, Kiambu County, has welcomed five babies in a remarkable delivery at Thika Level Five Hospital.
Mercy Kanini gave birth to the quintuplets through a vaginal delivery. The unusual case has attracted attention from her community and the wider public.
Doctors had prepared for a Caesarean section after Mercy went into labour. However, her labour progressed quickly, while the first baby was in a favourable position.
The medical team then proceeded with the vaginal delivery.
Fifth Baby Arrives as a Surprise
Prenatal scans had shown that Mercy was carrying four babies.
She delivered the first four babies safely. However, the medical team later discovered that there was another baby.
The fifth newborn came as an unexpected surprise to the family and medical team.
The quintuplets comprise four girls and one boy.
The five babies were taken to the newborn unit after delivery. They were placed in incubators for specialised care.
The mother and her newborns are reported to be in stable condition.
Family Now Has Seven Children
Mercy and her husband, Evans Nyamhanga, were already raising two children.
The couple had a boy and a girl before welcoming the quintuplets.
Their family has now grown to seven children.
The parents have described the arrival of the five babies as a blessing. However, they also face the huge financial responsibility of raising five newborns at once.
Family Appeals for Support
The couple now needs diapers, clothing, feeding supplies and other essentials for the babies.
They have appealed to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, local leaders and well-wishers for support.
The family hopes assistance will help them meet the babies’ needs as they begin life as a family of nine.
Mercy’s remarkable delivery has brought joy to the family. It has also highlighted the challenges that can come with an unexpected multiple birth.
