Rescuers took injured passengers to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital after the matatu overturned at Umoja Junction on Thursday night.
Several people sustained injuries in a Kangundo Road crash after a Forward Sacco matatu overturned on Thursday night. The accident occurred at Umoja Junction, near the Kangundo Road Fire Station, at around 10pm.
The matatu was reportedly taking passengers home when it overturned, trapping some beneath the wreckage. Rescuers took injured passengers to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment.
Rescue efforts after Kangundo Road crash
Images shared online showed crowds gathering around the overturned matatu as rescuers worked to free trapped passengers. Police officers later arrived at the scene and arranged for the removal of the wreckage.
Meanwhile, footage circulating on social media appeared to show the matatu travelling at speed before the accident. It also appeared to show the vehicle overtaking several other vehicles along the road.
Some passengers could be heard shouting, while others extended their hands outside the moving matatu. Investigations were expected to establish what caused the vehicle to overturn. The footage raised questions about the journey before the crash.
Earlier fatal accident on Ngong Road
The night-time accident followed another crash in Nairobi earlier on Thursday that killed three people and injured others. That incident occurred at about 7:25am at Kenol Stage, near Raila Odinga International Stadium along Ngong Road.
A dark blue saloon car reportedly lost control while travelling at high speed from the Ngong direction. Eyewitnesses said it struck the pavement, veered off the road and hit a woman waiting for a matatu to town.
Witnesses also said boda boda riders later set the wreckage ablaze, claiming they wanted to drive away bad omens.
The two crashes came amid intensified National Transport and Safety Authority crackdowns on reckless driving and unroadworthy vehicles. The authority has been conducting the operations along major roads and highways across the country.
