Martha Karua highlights Ghana’s school feeding programme and calls for equal opportunities for Kenyan children after visiting the former president.
Kenyan opposition leader Martha Karua visits Kufuor in Accra, highlighting the former Ghanaian president’s investment in healthcare and education. She met John Agyekum Kufuor at his residence and later shared her reflections on X.
Karua said his administration’s record showed why investing in people should underpin national development. She also highlighted school feeding as an example of policy serving several public needs.
Karua visits Kufuor: School meals in focus
Karua singled out Ghana’s school feeding programme for connecting children’s nutrition with education while supporting local agriculture. She said the initiative improved access to meals, supported learning and created opportunities for agricultural producers.
In her assessment, these benefits illustrated how one public programme could address both social and economic needs. Her message also emphasised the lasting value of leadership that prioritises people’s welfare.
Kufuor served as Ghana’s president from 2001 to 2009. During his administration, Ghana introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme and expanded social programmes, including the school feeding initiative.
Equal opportunities for Kenyan children
Turning to Kenya, Karua said a person’s birthplace should not determine their opportunities. She also expressed a desire for every child to pursue their potential, regardless of their circumstances.
Her vision linked access to opportunity with dignity, which she said should not remain a privilege. The visit comes amid Kenyan debate over investment in healthcare, education, social protection and economic opportunities.
However, Karua gave no further details about the meeting. Her statement did not indicate whether she and Kufuor discussed specific policies during the visit.
