Saumu Mbuvi has withdrawn her bid for the Nairobi County Woman Representative seat ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The businesswoman announced her decision on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, weeks after declaring her intention to contest the seat under the National Economic Development Party (NEDP).

Mbuvi said the decision followed personal reflection, advice from her father, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, and unexpected political developments.

Sonko’s Advice Influences Decision

In her statement, Mbuvi described stepping aside as a difficult choice. She also thanked supporters who had backed her political ambitions since she launched her campaign.

She reportedly referred to “behind-the-scenes plot twists” as part of the circumstances surrounding her withdrawal. Despite leaving the race, Mbuvi indicated that she remained committed to community service and positive change in Nairobi.

Her announcement leaves questions about her future political plans. However, she has not ruled out returning to public service later.

A Brief Political Campaign

Mbuvi announced her candidacy on September 21, 2026, pledging to seek the Nairobi Woman Representative seat on the NEDP ticket. Her campaign ran under the slogan “A New Voice for a Brighter Nairobi.”

She outlined priorities including education, skills development, employment, healthcare and women’s economic empowerment.

She also highlighted youth unemployment and entrepreneurship as issues requiring attention across the capital. At the time, Mbuvi said leadership should focus on delivering meaningful results rather than simply holding public office.

NEDP Ticket Remains Open

Mbuvi’s withdrawal comes after NEDP clarified that aspirants would have to compete in party primaries instead of receiving direct nominations. The party’s position meant she would still have needed to win the nomination to represent NEDP in the 2027 election.

Her exit now removes her from the party’s emerging contest for the Nairobi Woman Representative position, although the broader race remains open to other aspirants.

What Next for Saumu Mbuvi?

Mbuvi has emphasised that stepping aside does not end her commitment to serving the public. Her next move remains uncertain as Nairobi politicians continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, her withdrawal marks a change in direction after a short campaign focused on women, young people and vulnerable families.
