Gospel singer Mercy Masika

Njugush, Kabi WaJesus and other creators offer playful lessons as Mercy Masika’s wife-training programme draws mixed reactions.

The Mercy Masika masterclass on becoming a wife has inspired humorous spin-offs from Kenyan celebrities and content creators. Their online lessons range from supporting Manchester United to becoming a husband or a well-behaved pastor’s child.

However, the response extends beyond comedy, with the announcement also prompting debate about responsibility within marriage. Some support the gospel singer’s programme, while others question the expectations placed on women.

Creators put their own twist on the classes

Comedian and actor Njugush joined the trend with a masterclass on becoming a Manchester United fan. His contribution took the format away from relationships and into football fandom.

Meanwhile, YouTuber and digital creator Kabi WaJesus offered a Becoming a Husband masterclass. He argued that men should also make a deliberate effort to learn how to become better husbands.

Events MC and entertainer MC Gogo similarly adopted the husband-training theme, adding another contribution focused on men.

Content creator William Kiragu, popularly known as Mwalimu Kiragu, chose a different angle: becoming a good pastor’s child. Kiragu is known for his humorous online skits.

Teacher Cilla, meanwhile, explored enjoying a two-month holiday and becoming a wealth educator. Those contributions broadened the trend further, bringing leisure and financial education into the mix.

What the Mercy Masika masterclass covers

Behind the online humour is Masika’s Becoming a Wife Masterclass, which Women of Light Ministry has organised. The programme is scheduled to run from November 21 to December 12.

It centres on Christian teachings about marriage, covering biblical marriage, intimacy and building a marriage. While the spin-offs explore unrelated subjects, Masika’s programme focuses on women interested in that training.

Announcement draws support and criticism

Media personality Mashirima Kapombe is among those defending Masika’s right to offer the programme. Other supporters have also backed her decision to teach women who want to take part.

Critics, however, question why women appear to shoulder much of the responsibility for learning how marriages work. They have also called for similar attention to women’s financial empowerment and other pressing issues affecting women.

The reactions therefore span both playful reinterpretations and serious questions about relationships. Alongside the jokes, the announcement has opened a wider conversation about gender roles and expectations of husbands and wives.
