Original SNES games attract collectors as interest in retro gaming grows.
Collectors and new fans are competing for a shrinking supply of original Nintendo cartridges, pushing some classic titles into hundreds of dollars.
SNES game prices remain high in 2026 as growing interest in retro gaming meets a limited cartridge supply. Nostalgia, collecting and younger audiences discovering older titles all contribute to demand.
However, prices vary sharply across the Super Nintendo Entertainment System’s library. Loose copies of Super Mario World sell for around $17 on eBay, while Earthbound averages almost $400.
Digital rereleases and remakes offer other ways to play many classics. Even so, some buyers still want original cartridges to own and display.
Why scarcity shapes SNES game prices
Nintendo no longer produces SNES cartridges, leaving buyers to compete for surviving copies. Meanwhile, decades of damage and loss have reduced the stock that collectors can find.
The console launched in Japan as the Super Famicom in late 1990, then reached the United States in 1991. It sold just over 49 million units worldwide during its lifetime.
Software sales totalled just over 379 million units, compared with more than 921 million for Nintendo’s Wii. However, those totals do not mean individual SNES titles remain widely available.
Earthbound sold only about 140,000 copies in the United States. Its limited supply and subsequent cult following help explain its much higher resale price.
By contrast, Nintendo produced Super Mario World in large numbers, keeping loose copies relatively affordable. The gap shows why the same console can offer both inexpensive purchases and costly collector favourites.
Nostalgia and new audiences sustain demand
Many people who played SNES games as children now have disposable income to revisit those memories. Others want titles they could not own when they were younger.
Prices have also climbed as interest in retro gaming has grown since the 2010s. A copy of Zelda: A Link to the Past cost about $17 in 2010; it now averages around $45.
Meanwhile, YouTube gameplay videos and speedrunning have introduced classic games to audiences beyond their original players. Super Metroid ranks among the most frequently featured games in Awesome Games Done Quick’s history and averages just over $90.
Nintendo Switch Online and remakes also give new players access to older games. Yet those alternatives have not removed the appeal of original editions.
For example, Nintendo released a Super Mario RPG remake for Switch in 2023. The remake retails at $60, while the original SNES version sells for around $65.
