A London court sentenced the singer and his vocal coach after both pleaded guilty to affray over the 2023 confrontation.

American R&B singer Chris Brown has received an eight-month suspended prison sentence over a London nightclub assault in 2023. Southwark Crown Court suspended the term for 12 months.

Brown appeared alongside his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who received a four-month sentence suspended for the same period. Neither man will serve prison time unless they breach the relevant conditions during those 12 months.

Both men pleaded guilty to affray after prosecutors dropped more serious charges. Those charges included assault and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

Court reviews nightclub assault footage

The court reviewed surveillance footage showing the confrontation in the VIP section of Tape nightclub in Mayfair. Brown struck music producer Abe Diaw several times with a heavy glass tequila bottle, including twice on the head.

Diaw later underwent an assessment at a local hospital for head trauma, spinal tenderness and knee injuries.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described the deliberate use of a glass bottle as inherently dangerous. Although the confrontation lasted less than 20 seconds, he said the violence was intense.

The affray offence concerns the use or threat of unlawful violence. That conduct must be such that a person of reasonable firmness at the scene would fear for their safety.

Judge weighs mitigating factors

In sentencing Brown, Baumgartner stressed that celebrity status did not entitle the singer to preferential treatment under the law. However, the court also considered several mitigating factors.

These included Brown’s compliance with bail conditions and his role as a father to four children. The court also took account of his charitable contributions and the low likelihood of him reoffending.

Alongside the suspended terms, the judge ordered both men to pay Sh260,602 towards prosecution costs.

After the hearing, Brown left the court building with security and briefly interacted with supporters. He then departed in a private vehicle.
