Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is building a growing political movement ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election. The movement, Linda Mwananchi, has expanded its grassroots activities across the country.
Consequently, supporters have started referring to the growing momentum as the “Sifuna wave.” However, the movement now faces an important test over its presidential ticket.
What Is the Sifuna Wave?
The “Sifuna wave” refers to the growing support around Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. Sifuna formally declared his intention to pursue the presidency in July 2026. He also signalled plans to seek a new political vehicle for his 2027 campaign.
Since then, Linda Mwananchi has held rallies in several parts of the country. The movement held its first major Nairobi rally on September 13, 2026. Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino were among the leaders mobilising supporters. The Nairobi event followed months of grassroots mobilisation.
Western Kenya Endorses Sifuna
Sifuna’s campaign also received significant backing from leaders in Western Kenya. In July, several leaders endorsed him as their preferred presidential candidate. The group included Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga and Bumula MP Jack Wamboka.
The endorsements gave Sifuna an important boost as he sought to expand his political base. However, regional endorsements do not automatically translate into a national opposition ticket.
Orengo Challenges the Presidential Ticket
Meanwhile, Sifuna faces competition from within Linda Mwananchi. Siaya Governor James Orengo has declared that he is also a serious presidential contender.
His announcement has created questions about how Linda Mwananchi will eventually choose its presidential candidate. Orengo has argued that the movement should allow internal competition before settling on a flag bearer.
At the same time, several Sifuna allies continue to publicly back him. Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, for instance, has maintained that Sifuna remains the movement’s preferred presidential candidate. Therefore, the contest could test the movement’s ability to balance internal democracy with political unity.
Opposition Leaders Hold Consultations
Beyond Linda Mwananchi, opposition leaders are also holding talks over the 2027 election. Sifuna has recently met figures including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka as opposition leaders explore ways to work together.
The meetings have not been presented as a final coalition agreement. Nevertheless, they show that discussions around a possible united opposition are gaining momentum.
What Could Happen Next?
Sifuna has already built considerable visibility ahead of 2027. However, visibility alone will not guarantee a presidential nomination.
He must now expand Linda Mwananchi’s national support while managing competing ambitions within the movement. At the same time, opposition leaders must agree on whether to compete separately or unite behind one candidate.
The Outlook
The Sifuna wave has clearly become part of Kenya’s 2027 political conversation. His rallies, regional endorsements and growing political network have strengthened his position. Nevertheless, the race remains open.
Orengo’s presidential ambitions, ongoing opposition consultations and the search for a political vehicle could significantly shape Sifuna’s next move.
Ultimately, the biggest question is no longer whether Sifuna has momentum. It is whether he can turn that momentum into a national coalition capable of delivering a presidential ticket in 2027.
