Planning to travel outside Kenya? Applying for a Kenyan passport is now done online through the eCitizen platform. However, applicants must still appear physically for document verification and biometric capture.
Here is a simple guide to the current Kenyan passport application process.
Step 1: Apply Through eCitizen
Log into your eCitizen account and select the Directorate of Immigration Services. Choose the passport application service and complete the online application form.
You will provide personal details, citizenship information, occupation and other required information. After completing the application, pay the prescribed passport fee through the available eCitizen payment options.
The current passport fees are:
- 34-page Ordinary Passport: KSh7,550
- 50-page Ordinary Passport: KSh9,550
- 66-page Ordinary Passport: KSh12,050
- Lost or mutilated passport: KSh20,050
These are the current fees listed by the Directorate of Immigration Services. After payment, download and print your Form 19 and two payment invoices for submission.
Step 2: Prepare Your Documents
For a first-time adult application, carry your original National ID and copy. You will also need your original birth certificate and copy if you are a Kenyan citizen by birth.
Other documents may include your parents’ identification or relevant supporting documents. For minors, a completed consent form and the required parental documents are needed.
For lost passports, you will also need a police abstract, sworn affidavit and personal statement. The official requirements can vary depending on your application category.
Step 3: Book Biometrics
After submitting your application and making the payment, book your appointment through eCitizen. Currently, passport processing centres operate in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Embu, Kisii, Kericho and Bungoma.
Next, attend your appointment at the selected passport centre. During the visit, immigration officers will verify your documents. They will also capture your photograph and fingerprints for biometric enrolment.
Importantly, the Directorate of Immigration Services confirms that you no longer need to provide a copy of your recommender’s ID.
Therefore, check your documents carefully before attending the appointment. This can help you avoid unnecessary delays during the enrolment process.
Step 4: Track and Collect Your Passport
First, the official service charter gives a 14-working-day processing timeline. However, processing may depend on successful application and biometric enrolment.
Meanwhile, you can track your passport application through eCitizen. Alternatively, send your application number by SMS to 22222.
Once your passport is ready, collect it from the same passport centre where you completed biometric enrolment. Therefore, remember to carry your original ID and invoice with the collection token.
Finally, always use official government channels. Most importantly, avoid unverified agents who promise faster passport processing. Such offers may lead to unnecessary costs or fraud.
