Mouthwashing, the indie horror game

The indie horror game’s adaptation brings together Karyn Kusama, screenwriters Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, and producer Scott Derrickson.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the Mouthwashing film rights from developer Wrong Organ, with Karyn Kusama attached to direct. The project will adapt the indie horror game about a stranded spaceship crew losing its grip on reality.

Kusama previously directed Jennifer’s Body and The Invitation. Meanwhile, Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, the screenwriters behind The Invitation, will write the adaptation.

Scott Derrickson, whose directing credits include The Black Phone and Sinister, will produce the film. Together, the team brings experience across several established horror titles to the project.

Mouthwashing film takes on psychological horror

The game’s horror centres on the crew’s deteriorating mental state aboard the stranded spacecraft. Rather than relying heavily on jump scares, it uses unsettling imagery and weighty themes to build its disturbing atmosphere.

That approach also distinguishes Mouthwashing from the more outlandish horror of Resident Evil, another gaming franchise Sony has adapted. Its surreal imagery gives the filmmakers a different kind of material to bring to the screen.

Meanwhile, players now have more ways to experience the story ahead of its cinema adaptation. Mouthwashing launched on PC in 2024 and has expanded to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The game is also available through Xbox Game Pass, extending access beyond its original PC release.
