Saumu Mbuvi, daughter of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has announced her bid for the Nairobi County Woman Representative seat ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Mbuvi made the announcement on Monday, September 21, 2026, saying she intends to contest the seat on the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) ticket.
Saumu Mbuvi Outlines Her Vision
Mbuvi said her decision to enter politics comes from a desire to serve Nairobi residents. She described leadership as a responsibility rather than simply a title.
She also said her vision is to see political representation translate into practical results for residents. Her campaign operates under the banner “A New Voice for a Brighter Nairobi”, alongside the message “Equal Voices. Real Opportunities. Lasting Change.”
Four Key Areas in Her Agenda
Mbuvi has highlighted four key areas in her campaign agenda:
- Education and Skills Development: She wants to promote access to education, vocational training and skills development, particularly for young people.
- Jobs and Enterprise: She has identified youth unemployment as a key concern and wants to support entrepreneurship, job creation and small businesses.
- Healthcare and Wellbeing: Her agenda includes improving access to healthcare and strengthening social wellbeing for Nairobi residents.
- Safety and Inclusion: She wants to promote a safer and more inclusive Nairobi, with greater attention to women, girls and vulnerable families.
She has also emphasized economic empowerment for women, including greater opportunities for women entrepreneurs and girls across the county.
NEDP Primary Process
Although Mbuvi has announced her intention to seek the seat on the NEDP ticket, the party has clarified that aspirants will have to participate in democratic party primaries.
Therefore, her announcement does not amount to an automatic NEDP nomination. The party has said candidates who emerge victorious in the primaries will be cleared to represent NEDP in the respective elective positions.
Nairobi Woman Representative Race
Saumu Mbuvi’s announcement adds another name to the Nairobi Woman Representative race ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Meanwhile, other aspirants are expected to present their policies, party affiliations and priorities to Nairobi voters. As campaigns take shape, candidates will seek support by highlighting issues affecting residents across the county.
Mbuvi’s campaign currently focuses on women’s economic empowerment, youth opportunities, healthcare and social protection. Her entry is likely to add further attention to the Nairobi Woman Representative contest.
