Kalonzo says the tribunal’s decision clears the way for the alliance’s registration.
Kalonzo says the Registrar of Political Parties can now complete the alliance’s registration following the tribunal’s decision.
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has lifted orders suspending the registration of the Ukombozi Alliance. The decision clears a legal hurdle for the coalition seeking to replace Azimio la Umoja One Kenya.
In a statement on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Kalonzo said the tribunal had discharged its earlier suspension. He added that no tribunal order now stood in the way of registration.
As a result, Kalonzo said, the Registrar of Political Parties could proceed and conclude the process. The decision gives the United Opposition fresh momentum as parties prepare for the 2027 general election.
Ukombozi Alliance name dispute
The tribunal had halted Azimio’s proposed name change on October 13, 2026, following a challenge over naming rights. Chairperson Innocent Muganda barred the registrar from approving, registering or gazetting the proposed name.
The restriction followed a petition claiming prior rights through the Ukombozi Peoples Party. That challenge temporarily stalled the coalition’s registration during early political realignments ahead of the next election.
Meanwhile, correspondence from the registrar had also raised questions about the availability of the proposed name. In a September 8 letter, the registrar said the name had neither approval nor authorisation. The letter further noted that another applicant had reserved it on July 20, 2026.
Thursday’s decision removes the tribunal’s suspension, allowing the registration process to move forward. However, Kalonzo’s statement described the next step as completion of registration by the registrar.
Kalonzo leads the alliance, taking over from former President Uhuru Kenyatta. During the adoption of the new name, he said the alliance would seek to accommodate other parties as the 2027 election approaches.
