Veteran journalist Yvonne Okwara-Matole bid farewell to Citizen TV on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, ending an eight-and-a-half-year run at Royal Media Services (RMS).

Okwara delivered her final broadcast during The Explainer, reflecting on a career that has spanned nearly two decades in journalism. She thanked her colleagues, mentors and viewers for supporting her journey. Her departure marks a significant moment for Kenyan television journalism.

Okwara’s Emotional Goodbye

During her final appearance, Okwara reflected on the responsibility of informing the public and holding leaders accountable.

She expressed gratitude to the people who supported her work behind the scenes. She also thanked viewers who followed her weekly analysis of Kenya’s political, economic and social affairs. Okwara encouraged Kenyans to keep questioning those in power and demanding accountability.

“I am not done building. I’m simply moving to build something else,” she said during her sign-off.

Her remarks hinted at a new professional chapter, although she did not announce the details during the broadcast.

Honouring Those Who Shaped Her Career

Okwara acknowledged veteran broadcaster Jimmy Gathu for giving her an early opportunity at Hot 96 FM. She also recognised journalist Joe Ageyo for challenging her to grow professionally. In addition, she credited former Standard Group chief executive Sam Shollei with offering valuable career guidance.

These mentors helped shape her approach to reporting, interviewing and analysing complex national issues. Okwara’s journey also demonstrates how journalists can build successful media careers outside their original fields of study.

From Microbiology to National Television

Okwara studied microbiology before entering the media industry. She began her broadcasting journey in radio before moving into television journalism.

Over the years, she gained experience at several media organisations, including KBC, Nation Media Group, QFM and KTN News.

She joined Citizen TV in 2018 after leaving KTN News. At RMS, she became a familiar face on prime-time bulletins and major political discussions.

Her roles included Business Editor and a contributor to News Gang. She also established herself through The Explainer, where she examined issues affecting Kenyans.

What Comes Next for Yvonne Okwara?

Okwara’s departure has prompted interest in her next move. A recent report, citing information attributed to Dennis Itumbi, linked her to a role as Head of Government Relations for East Africa at Shuga Global.

The reported appointment would mark a shift from mainstream broadcasting to government relations and public affairs. However, the details of her transition should be confirmed through an official announcement from Okwara or the organisation.

Her departure closes an important chapter at Citizen TV. Nevertheless, her farewell message suggests that she intends to pursue new opportunities while continuing to make an impact beyond the newsroom.
