The Organization for Transformative Works estimates a two-week recovery but hopes to restore limited access sooner.
The AO3 outage could last up to four weeks, the nonprofit behind the fan fiction platform has warned. The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) now estimates that restoring service will take around two weeks.
However, the organisation says the process could stretch to four weeks. It took Archive of Our Own offline just after 3am ET, initially scheduling a 12-hour maintenance window.
AO3 hosts millions of fanworks drawing on books, films, television shows and other existing works. The extended shutdown interrupts access for people who use the platform to read and publish fan fiction.
AO3 outage may ease before full recovery
Meanwhile, OTW hopes to bring the site back with limited functionality before completing the recovery. Even then, users could face further temporary shutdowns while volunteers work to resolve the problems.
The organisation has also told users to watch for further updates. Its engineers work as volunteers rather than paid staff.
A former AO3 volunteer who moderates the r/AO3 community said OTW had confirmed that the site’s data remained intact. That offers reassurance about the stored fanworks despite the prolonged loss of access.
Before the shutdown, OTW logged problems affecting several parts of the platform between October 23 and 24. Those issues involved email notifications, search, reading history and listings.
For now, OTW’s recovery estimate remains around two weeks, with a possible return to limited service sooner.
