American R&B singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment after a London court handed him an eight-month suspended prison sentence.

The 37-year-old received the sentence on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court. The ruling followed his guilty plea over an attack on music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw at a Mayfair nightclub in February 2023.

Brown’s sentence is suspended for 12 months. Therefore, he will not serve the prison term immediately, although further offending during the suspension period could lead to imprisonment.

Chris Brown Admits Affray

The case stems from an incident at Tape nightclub in London on February 19, 2023. Prosecutors told the court that Brown struck Diaw with a glass tequila bottle, hitting him twice on the head. CCTV footage showed the attack unfolding on the crowded dance floor.

Diaw suffered head and knee injuries and received hospital treatment. Prosecutors also said Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, joined the assault.

Brown pleaded guilty to affray in July 2026. The public order offence involves using or threatening unlawful violence in a way that would cause a person of reasonable firmness to fear for their safety.

In return for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped more serious charges, including attempted grievous bodily harm, assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

Vocal Coach Also Receives Suspended Sentence

Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray over his involvement in the incident. The court sentenced him to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months. Both men were also ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.

During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the bottle attack as dangerous. He warned that striking someone on the head with glass could have caused more serious injuries.

The court considered Brown’s guilty plea and other mitigating factors when determining his sentence. However, the judge stressed that celebrity status did not entitle him to preferential treatment.

Arrest Followed Two Years After Attack

Brown left the United Kingdom after the 2023 incident. Police arrested him in Manchester on May 15, 2025, after he returned for a concert.

He was initially denied bail but was later released after providing £5 million in security. The arrangement allowed his international tour to continue while the case proceeded.

The sentencing concludes a legal case that remained unresolved for more than three years after the nightclub incident.

Although Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment, the suspended sentence leaves him facing potential jail time if he commits another offence during the 12-month period.
