US President Donald Trump has called for artificial intelligence to be renamed “super intelligence.” He made the remarks during his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 22, 2026.
Trump Explains the Proposed Name Change
Trump argued that the word “artificial” makes the technology sound fake. He said the term does not accurately reflect AI’s capabilities.
“It makes it sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing,” Trump said.
He then announced that US government documents would adopt the new terminology.
“From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully, the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term ‘super’ as opposed to artificial,” Trump said.
Trump Pushes “Super Intelligence”
According to Trump, the technology should now be known as “super intelligence” or “SI.” He also described the new term as more accurate and said it “sounds much better.”
However, the phrase superintelligence already has a specific meaning in AI research. It generally describes a hypothetical form of intelligence that greatly exceeds human capabilities across many areas.
Trump Opposes Global AI Controls
Meanwhile, Trump rejected international efforts to create broad global controls over AI. He said the United States would not support what he called a globalist scheme to control the technology.
Trump also argued that the US should continue encouraging AI development. He said he would not “stifle growth” of technology he expects to become bigger than the Industrial Revolution.
AI Debate Continues
Trump’s proposal comes as governments debate AI safety, regulation and technological competition. At the same UN gathering, other leaders called for stronger safeguards and responsible AI development.
Therefore, the debate now covers both how AI should develop and how governments should manage it.
